Choosing care is about more than comparing monthly prices
Families in Deltona and Ormond Beach often compare remaining at home, hiring in-home help, assisted living and memory care. The right fit depends on how much support is needed each day, safety, the availability of family caregivers and the full cost of services.
What costs should families compare?
- Staying at home: housing, utilities, meals, transportation, home maintenance, emergency response and any paid caregiving hours.
- In-home care: the hourly rate multiplied by the actual weekly hours required, plus expenses not included in the caregiver’s services.
- Assisted living: monthly accommodation, meals, activities, support with daily living and any additional levels of care or personal services.
- Memory care: the setting, supervision, individualized support, activities and additional services appropriate for the resident.
Ask for a written breakdown of the community’s current charges and exactly what is included. Needs and rates can change after a care assessment, so a comparison should be tailored to the individual.
Does Medicaid help pay for assisted living in Florida?
Florida’s Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program may cover eligible long-term care services in approved settings. It is not the same as regular Medicaid, and eligibility, enrollment, plan authorization and resident financial responsibility must be confirmed individually. Medicaid does not automatically pay every charge, including room and board. For official guidance, visit Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration.
