7 Signs It May Be Time to Consider Assisted Living

One change by itself does not always mean a move is necessary. But several changes together may be a reason to explore additional support.

1. Falls or Increasing Safety Concerns

Repeated falls, difficulty transferring, unsafe wandering or frequent emergency calls can signal that living alone is becoming harder to manage safely.

2. Medication Problems

Missed doses, duplicate doses, confusion about prescriptions or frequent medication changes can create avoidable risk.

3. Poor Nutrition or Weight Loss

Empty refrigerators, skipped meals, spoiled food or unexplained weight loss may indicate that daily meal preparation has become difficult.

4. Increasing Isolation

Less social interaction, giving up hobbies or avoiding outings can affect emotional and physical well-being.

5. Memory or Judgment Changes

Getting lost, leaving appliances on, repeated confusion or difficulty managing money may be signs that more structured support should be considered.

6. Caregiver Burnout

When family caregivers are exhausted, missing work or struggling to provide consistent supervision, additional support can benefit both the resident and the family.

7. Frequent Hospitalizations or Rehab Stays

Repeated transitions between home, hospital and rehabilitation can be a sign that the current living arrangement is no longer meeting the person’s needs.
